CLIPPERS AND TRIMMERS: Use the adjustment feature of an adjustable blade clipper to fine tune cutting lengths. A small adjustment can make all the difference in precision blending.
Always start with clean dry hair. Gels and sprays make it harder to cut. Lightly moisten the hair with a spray bottle for control.
To avoid cutting hair too short, cut from the top of the head down to the sides.
WEIGHING THE PROS AND CONS OF A CORDED VERSUS A CORDLESS MODEL, JUST REMEMBER: Corded models deliver constant even power, and usually more of it. Cordless tools offer freedom from the tangle of cords and the outlet.
When deciding to use a clipper or a trimmer, Keep these things in mind. The most significant differences are tooth width, tooth depth and blade thickness. These all add up to differences in closeness, precision, and volume of hair that can be removed. Some tools clip, some trim and finish, and still some others can do both. With some tools the capabilities are broader, others are more specialized. Don’t hesitate in calling our Andis pros in making the right decision for your needs.
When selecting snap on guards, start with the longer hair guard first. You can always go shorter later.
Always cut hair in a well lit area.
BLADES: Engage blades on the blade drive with the clipper running, this protects the blade drive from damage.
The correct way to change ( remove and replace ) a blade on a detachable blade clipper is by remembering this “ON-ON, OFF-EITHER”. The spring hinge on a detachable blade clipper is very strong. If you attempt to engage a blade with the clipper off the blade drive can be damaged.
Do not push or shove the clipper through thick hair. Let the power of the tool do the work.
Cut hair in vertical sections or at a diagonal. Horizontal cuttingleaves marks and is harder to blend.
Reviewing the differences between guards and detachable blades, as the purpose and use of the two are the same, however the finished results can be different. Detachable blades will create a cleaner, smoother look faster and easier. Guards are a great way to build confidence and learn to use a clipper. Detachable blades also offer a wider range of length choices at the shorter end of the spectrum.
Try a ceramic blade, as they are light weight and highly durable. They do not transmit heat so they run cool and fast. They stay sharper longer. Best of all they cut smoother and faster making haircutting a pleasure.
When cutting longer or thicker hair, subdivide the hair into smaller sections for accuracy and control.
Weather permitting, cut outside on the back deck! Better lighting and less clean up!
HAIR DRYERS: Use the lowest heat level possible to get the job done. This will protect the hair from unnecessary heat and damage.
STYLING IRONS: Small sections create smaller, tighter curls. Larger sections create larger softer waves.
Cutting small children's hair is best in front of the television. This will help if they are nervous and will also help them to sit still.
FADE SIDEWAYS - heads are curved. Use sideways blade motion to use the curve of the head for faster, smoother fades.
ROCK THE BLADE - Use a rocking motion form the leading edge to the back edge of the clipper blade for smooth fading.
OPEN UP - Open your blade to the #1 position for softer bending on coarser hair textures.
CUT DOWN - Use longer guars higher up and work to smaller guards lower down the head to prevent steps in the haircut.
CUT ALL THE WAY ACROSS - Cut across the full length of the clipper comb for smooth tapering without bumps and waves.
USE YOUR MIRROR - Trim one side and turn it to your mirror. Use the mirror to see both sides at the same time.
BLOCK AND CLEAN - Block clean lines and turn the trimmer over to clean up to the crisp edge.
SPIN THEM - Use your chair to work your way around the client.
SQUARE UP - use square blade trimmers in tighter areas where a T blade would be too big.
TRIM EARLY - Trim and edge the hair cut in the middle of the cut, not the end. Haircuts will look more finished sooner and save cutting time.
GUARD YOUR GUARD - When cutting with snap on guide combs keep a finger on the corner of the guard for safety and security.
WORK DOWN - use linger guide combs first and work down the head to smaller sizes to prevent lines and steps in your haircuts.
TAPER THE EDGE - Use the adjustable blade tapering lever to subtly taper the bottom edge of classic guy’s haircuts.
LAYER THE TOP FIRST - Removing excess length form the top of the head makes blending easier.
WORK AT AN ANGLE - Clipper up the sides and back at an angle - vertical strokes leaves streaks, angles blend better.
“T” OFF - A T blade trimmer makes haircut lines and edges easier to groom.
GO SMALL - Use a smaller comb when you switch to a trimmer - small tools work best together.
WORK CORDLESS - cordless trimmers are smaller and lighter. Freedom from cords makes trimming easier.
WORK HIGHER - Pump up your styling chair to get an eye level look at the haircut. See better = cut better.
SQUARE THE CORNERS - Guy’s haircuts look better with squarer corners at the back. Avoid rounding off this key corner.
